Orphea Aerts (1999, Belgium) is a visual artist working with kinetic sculptures, installations and video. Movement plays a central role in her practice. Objects vibrate, react or wander through space, while others wait to be activated. Her works often remain dormant until a visitor activates the work. In that moment the audience becomes an essential part of the artwork. Through sensors, simple technologies and repurposed devices she creates situations in which the presence of viewers triggers actions or behavior. Humor and absurdity subtly guide her work. By using everyday objects and stripping them of their original function she gives them a new life as autonomous sculptures.
