Jiyoung Chu (1994, KR/BE) is a Korean artist based in Antwerp. Her work revolves around an interest in the written word and symbolic imaginaries, converging in a search for an individual language. She uses observation, documentation and analysis as her play tools, and her work is often informed by her cultural background. The foundation of Jiyoung Kim’s artistic practice is laid by her training in tailoring. The craft of creating garments, which was passed down generationally in the artist’s family, permeates her practice through a particular sensitivity to working with bodies, as well as an interest in systems of measurement and reference that arise from the individual into the universal. From describing one’s personal space to embodying a standard, a unit for communicating spatial information.
